Rijeka Mosque, facing directly into a bay, this mosque became the first in the Adriatic Sea. Futuristic, this mosque became the center of Islamic activities in Rijeka, Croatia. Maybe the name of the Rijeka Islamic Center Mosque still sounds foreign to Muslim Travellers. But once you see the look of this mosque, you will immediately fall in love.
This Rijeka Mosque is located in the port city of Rijeka, Croatia. If the mosque is usually in the middle of the city, the Islamic Center of Rijeka is on the seafront. This mosque was intentionally built on a hill and overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Therefore, the nickname is the First Mosque in the Adriatic Sea since the Kingdom of Turkey left the coast of Rijeka 500 years ago.
As mentioned, this mosque has a futuristic look. This mosque has 5 separate sections which form a large dome. The dome is made very fututistic and artistic by the architect, Dusan Dzamonja. The main ingredients are steel and concrete.
On the right side of the mosque there is a tower with a height of 23 meters. The tower is built with a spiral design. The lights on the tower are like flares for passing ships. This mosque even looks as far as Kvaerner Bay. The Kvaerner Bay itself is across the ocean close to Krk Island.
Travelers who enter the mosque will be more impressed. The inside consists of 4 floors separated from the main prayer hall. The mosque also has space for other activities, such as multipurpose halls, lecture halls, kindergartens, libraries, dining rooms, living rooms, cafeterias, sports fields, and parking.
Although it was only inaugurated in 2009, the Rijeka Islamic Center Mosque is able to become the center of Islamic culture in Croatia.
